Boardwalk To Beach, Near Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica, California

Following the concept of documenting a coastal highway as Berenice Abbott did in 1954 when she worked along U.S. 1 – ROADSIDE AMERICA. Abbott’s U.S. 1 was shot for the purpose of documenting a changing America with the advent of the coming interstate system proposed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956.

  •   Route 1 along the coastal area in southern California follows roughly the coast line where I plan to shoot the major beach communities from Santa Monica to Dana Point, California.

Note: Berenice Abbott‘s book on U.S. 1, U.S.A., was a book project which was never published in her life time. Ron Kurtz and Hank O’Neal recently got it into print with the help of the great photographic book publisher, Steidl. The U.S. 1, Roadside America was accompanied with four other companion books in a beautiful slip case; nice work guys.
